Your website needs to be designed properly and with the proper search engine optimization (SEO) to be properly indexed by the search engines so users can find you. And if you want search engines to find you, you need to do SEO right. Read on to learn three things that you should not do when doing SEO for your website.

1.  Using the Incorrect Keywords

Internet searchers will find your website by typing search phrases into popular search engines. This is the reason it is so important to be sure that the content of your site needs to closely mirror what it is that your desired visitors are looking for. For example, if your site is about home improvements, you will surely have a lot of articles on your site about things to do to improve the home, and you will have the keyword phrase ‘home improvements’ in your site. But what if the most common keyword phrase typed by users is ‘remodel house’? Your site could easily miss much of the traffic that you are looking for. To make sure that you are capturing the audience you want, be sure to use Google’s keyword tool to find out what keywords are the most searched and cater your target to those keywords.

2.  Making Sharing Hard

Social media is now a huge part of SEO, and your site will gain more traffic and rankings if it is very easy for people to share things from your website.  It doesn’t matter if the things to be shared are articles, products, pages or just a Like button, you want to make it easy as pie for users to share things from your site.  More importantly this is a great way to use social media to drive traffic to your website and engage your visitors.

3.  Neglecting Your Site’s Back Pages

Google indexes webpages not websites.  Don’t forget that.  You can use all of your pages to target your keywords.  So don’t put all of your eggs in one basket (homepage) and optimize all of your content. Many times a visitor might not land on your homepage. Based upon the keyword phrase they enter, the search engine is going to bring your visitor to the particular page they need. So, you want every page to have appropriate content  and branding so that it is simple for them to navigate and find what they want. Don’t neglect your interior webpages.  Make them quality landing pages that sell your business or products.
