Twitter is a microblogging social media platform where users can leave text-based messages called “tweets”, that are less than 140 characters long. Twitter was launched in 2006 and now has more than 500 million registered users round the world. It has been described as the “SMS [text messaging] of the internet”.
Twitter accounts are free to use and companies can choose to pay for advertising on the platform.
Because of its wide reach, Twitter is an effective way to increase traffic to a website or blog. Tweets can contain links (which are shortened by Twitter) so articles or web pages can be easily shared across an internet community. Twitter is also a good tool for companies that want to be able to engage with their customers or help build a community from them. Twitter is an extremely cost-effective tool for business marketing. It requires no special equipment or expertise, just time and effort.
One of the biggest disadvantaged for using Twitter for business is the character limitation. Trying to convey any complex idea in fewer than 140 characters is difficult, especially when compared to other social media platforms that allow far more text. Twitter posts can also be easily buried among the other 300 million tweets that people make everyday. Twitter is currently working to add galleries to their platforms, but at present, graphics in tweets show up as urls. So there is little that can be done to make one 140 character tweet stand out from than the millions of others.
