Pitching Your Product Doesn’t Work Anymore

pitching-productsPitching your product to bloggers and journalists is typically not the way to go. Writers are looking for information that will help them write their own, not some story, however remarkable and compelling you may think it is, that is pitched by either you or a PR associate. Coming up with unique and innovative marking ideas for your small business can be a daunting task.

So for now, let’s try and forget that formula driven way and focus on giving the writers something good to write about. These pitches may bring in some outlets, but not the ones that you want, because a good way to look at it is, a media outlet that is willing to write about a bad pitch will give you bad exposure.

One fatal flaw is saying that your story is unique. It is very unlikely that it really is. You may think it is, but there has probably been some last minute, turn around, get rich story just like it a thousand times over.

A tip to have a writer actually write about you is to get to know what they write recently. It’s probably a bad idea to pitch an idea that they have just written about recently, because why would they care to write about the same thing once again? The story is likely to have less heart and be much less interesting as the original.

Finding what the writer’s interests are is a good way to interest them as well. Maybe they have particular interests in certain businesses or just starting out marketing. Don’t just simply say that you liked something they wrote recently and then pitch your idea, find what they enjoy writing about, because it’s not only good for them, it’s certainly going to be a better article for you.

Another thing to not do is to give a profile piece. Readers want to learn from your mistakes and find out the things that worked for you, not some generic piece that they don’t even care to finish reading. Targeting the readers will surely allow you to enjoy the benefits of great PR.

Getting to the point is another useful tool. One thing every writer learns is to revise, revise, and revise. Why?  Because everything can be trimmed down more and more and you can realize things that don’t need to be there to get to the same point. Companies should follow this as well, because if a writer has to read a long drawn out paragraph that could have been summarized in a sentence, then they’ll be unlikely to finish it.

Writers want to inform and entertain readers, the more you help them with that, then the more they’ll be able to help you market your business across the internet. This is important because internet marketing is regarded as one of the biggest trends in business advertising.
